Open a homeschool planner in March and the gaps are usually easy to spot. Reading is logged four days a week in tidy handwriting. Maths is logged three. The science column has said "volcano project" since the second week of October, and next to Spanish someone has written "restart" twice. Nothing has gone badly wrong here. The child is learning. But one or two subjects have quietly stopped moving, and they are almost always the subjects the teaching parent enjoys least, or feels least sure about.
That narrow problem is the one a supplemental app is actually good at. It is worth being precise about it, because the same subscription can be useful in one household and a waste of money in another. Everything below assumes the app is a small piece of the week, not the school itself.
The subject that keeps sliding to Friday
Most homeschooling parents are strong somewhere. A parent who reads aloud with real expression may not have touched algebra since they were fifteen. A nurse can teach the circulatory system from memory and still find English phonics genuinely strange, because nobody ever taught her the rules; she just read. Coding is the clearest case of all. A parent who is forty today almost certainly never had a single programming lesson at school, and cannot improvise one.
Handing that one subject to a structured program is a sensible decision, not a failure of nerve. A few habits keep it from drifting:
- Pick one subject, not four. If three subjects are wobbling at once, the problem is the timetable or your energy, and more screens will fix neither.
- Frequent and small beats long and occasional. Fifteen to twenty minutes, four days a week, does more for a nine-year-old's multiplication than an hour every Saturday that the whole family dreads by week three.
- Sit in for the first fortnight. Not to supervise, but to pick up the vocabulary yourself, so that later you can ask "show me how you got that" and follow the answer.
- Put a review date in the diary. Six weeks on, ask the child to do it off-screen: explain it out loud, or solve three problems on paper. If they cannot, the app is not doing the job and something has to change.
Outside feedback, without an outside classroom
By about age eight, most children have worked out that a parent's praise is not neutral. "You always say it's good" is a fair complaint. The same child who will not look at a page you have corrected in pencil often redoes a question quite calmly when a screen marks it wrong, because nobody's feelings are attached to it. That separation of correction from relationship is one of the more honest reasons to bring software into the house, and it is worth naming rather than dressing up as pure pedagogy.
The limit is equally concrete. A screen knows whether an answer matched. It does not know that your daughter got fourteen right by counting on her fingers under the table, that your son reads a paragraph fluently and cannot tell you one thing that happened in it, that letters are still reversing at nine, or that everything falls apart after four in the afternoon because he is squinting. Those observations come from a person sitting nearby. If an app is the only outside voice in the week, add at least one more: a co-op, a tutor for a single subject, a library club, a coach, a grandparent who asks what they learned and listens to the whole answer.
Records that hold up when somebody asks
Reporting duties differ enormously by country and region, and they change, so treat this as a prompt to check your own rather than a summary of them. Some US states run on portfolios: a log of what was covered, samples of the child's work, an annual review by a qualified evaluator, and standardised testing in a few set grades. Pennsylvania and New York both work broadly that way, with quite different paperwork. Australian states generally expect registration plus periodic evidence that a learning plan lines up with curriculum outcomes. In England, families need not follow the national curriculum, though a local authority may make informal enquiries about the education provided.
Under any of these, app data plays one narrow role. An export reading "Fractions: 14 sessions, 3h 20m, 82% accuracy" is a log entry. It is time-stamped, it is honest, and it saves you reconstructing February from memory in July. What it is not is evidence of what your child can do. Evaluators and reviewers want the child's own work: a page in their handwriting, a photo of the model, a paragraph they wrote, a book list with dates.
A monthly routine that takes ten minutes:
- Save the app's progress summary as a screenshot or PDF, with the date visible.
- Keep one piece of the child's own work per subject, written, photographed, or recorded as a thirty-second voice note of them explaining something.
- Add two sentences in your own words: "Covered equivalent fractions. Still needs prompting to find a common denominator."
- Update the book log.
One warning. An app's internal levels mean nothing outside it. "Level 12" is not a grade level and no reviewer is obliged to guess. Translate it before it goes into a file, in terms of what the child can now do unaided.

Limits worth stating plainly
It is not a school and cannot award anything. Apps of this kind are not accredited, do not issue credits, and do not produce a certificate a university or employer recognises. Those routes run through accredited distance schools, registered exam centres, national or state examinations, or equivalency tests. If your child is heading towards formal qualifications, find out what the receiving institution accepts when the child is thirteen or fourteen, not in the final year.
In-app assessment is a practice check. Adaptive difficulty adjusts questions; it does not diagnose. No app can identify dyslexia, dyscalculia, a hearing loss, or an attention difficulty. If a ten-year-old still counts up from one to work out 6 + 7, or an eight-year-old tells elaborate stories aloud but cannot get three sentences onto paper, that is a conversation with an educational psychologist, a speech and language therapist, or an optometrist, not a reason to add fifteen minutes of practice.
Streaks measure attendance. A sixty-day streak tells you the child turned up. It says nothing about whether the same problem can be solved on paper, at a different time of day, with no hints on offer. Check that separately, and let the paper check be the one you believe.
Judgement stays with the adult. Knowing what to skip, what to reteach a different way, and when the obstacle is confidence rather than content is the part of teaching that software does worst. A program presents the next unit. It cannot decide that this child should leave long division for a month and return to it after a run of easy wins.
Fitting it into a real week
A concrete shape, from a household with two children, one tablet, and a parent working three mornings. The eleven-year-old does twenty-five minutes on one strand only, fractions, Monday to Thursday, before lunch, at the kitchen table within earshot of an adult. The six-year-old gets ten to fifteen minutes after quiet time, sitting beside the parent, because at that age half the value is the conversation around the screen rather than the screen. Friday has no app at all: five minutes where each child teaches back one thing from the week, which the parent writes down for the file.
Multi-subject programs, Kid Genius World among them, make the opposite tempting. Reading, maths, science, geography, coding and languages are all sitting there, so why not use all of them? Because the homeschool already has a plan, and the app is meant to plug one hole in it. Two strands is usually the ceiling before the sessions stop being targeted and start being screen time that happens to look educational.
The measure that matters is not the dashboard. It is whether, six weeks from now, your child can do something away from the screen that they could not do today, and whether you, the person answerable for their education, can describe what they learned in your own words.
