A six-year-old sits down with a page of addition problems just after school. She answers three, then starts drawing a dinosaur in the margin. Four minutes have gone by. The adult across the table sees a child who will not focus. What is closer to the truth is that a battery has run down, and a six-year-old's battery for effortful, adult-directed work is genuinely short.
Most frustration around home learning comes from a mismatch between what adults expect attention to look like and what a young brain can actually hold. Getting the expectation right is not lowering the bar. It is the difference between a child who learns something in eight minutes and a child who learns to dread the table.
What attention actually looks like at each age
Teachers, paediatricians and occupational therapists often work from a rough rule of thumb: expect somewhere between two and five minutes of sustained attention per year of age. It is a guideline rather than a measurement, and children vary widely. But it is far more useful than assuming a child should keep going until the work is finished.
The wide band matters. The top of the range applies to something the child chose and finds absorbing. The bottom applies to a task an adult set, at a time the adult picked, with a right answer waiting at the end.

This is why a thirty-minute homework block fails a six-year-old. Thirty minutes sits at the extreme upper edge of what that age can manage, and only for something like building a marble run. Asking for it on spelling is asking for roughly three times what the child has.
Parents often counter with evidence: he played with Lego for forty-five minutes yesterday. That is real, and it is a different system. Interest-driven attention runs on curiosity and can go long. Effortful attention is what a child spends holding a goal in mind, ignoring the sibling, choosing a method, and starting again after a wrong answer. That second system is still under construction at six, and it drains fast.
Focus and compliance are not the same thing
Picture two children. One sits upright, pencil poised, eyes on the page, producing nothing for six minutes. The other rocks the chair, hums, taps a foot, and gets every question right while narrating out loud.
Adults routinely praise the first and correct the second. Only one of them is thinking.
Compliance is body position. Focus is whether the work moves. Three quick checks tell them apart: is anything appearing on the page, does the child catch and fix a mistake without being told, and can they explain what they just did in their own words. A child who can answer that third one was present. A child who cannot was somewhere else with a straight back.
There is a cost to confusing the two. Telling a child to stop fidgeting spends part of the same limited budget they need for the maths. If the movement is not disturbing anyone, letting it run usually buys more working minutes rather than fewer. And compliance has a tell: it stops the moment the adult leaves the room. Focus keeps going for a while.
When a child freezes on a problem
A seven-year-old reaches a word problem. The pencil goes down. He says he does not know. Then nothing for twenty seconds, and his eyes start to fill.
That is not refusal and it is rarely laziness. Working memory has jammed. The child is holding the question, the numbers, the fear of being wrong and the adult's face all at once, and there is no room left to think. Adding more input at that moment makes it worse, which is why repeating the question more slowly, stacking on hints, or pointing out that he managed this yesterday all tend to deepen the freeze.
What helps, roughly in order:
- Take the stakes off first. Say that this one is tricky and you will leave it for a minute. The tone does more than the words.
- Make the problem smaller. Cover everything except the first sentence. Ask for one piece only: how many did she start with?
- Change the channel. Have them say it aloud, draw it, or set it out with buttons or coins. A jammed route often clears when the information arrives a different way.
- Do one step yourself, then hand it back. Not the answer. The first move.
- Go backwards to something easy, let them succeed twice, then return.
Give it about two minutes. If nothing has moved, end that item rather than the session. Finishing a hard question is worth less than the child learning that being stuck is survivable and has exits.
Why small wins change what a child will attempt
Children make a prediction before they start anything: is effort likely to pay here. That prediction is built almost entirely from recent experience, and it updates faster than any encouragement an adult can offer.
A child who has failed the last four attempts at reading an unfamiliar word will not genuinely attempt the fifth. She will guess quickly, or go quiet, or announce that reading is boring. None of that is about confidence in the abstract. It is a reasonable forecast from her own data.
Which is why the mix of easy and hard inside a session matters more than the difficulty of any single task. A workable shape is a run of about eight items where six sit comfortably inside what the child can already do and two stretch. Six successes make the two stretches worth trying. Eight stretches make the whole thing not worth starting.
Two things make wins stick. First, name what the child did rather than what they are. Saying that they sounded out the first part before guessing gives them something repeatable, where calling them clever gives them something to lose. Second, keep visible evidence the child owns, such as a short dated list of words they can now read, or problems they can now do without help. Children are poor at remembering their own progress, and showing them last month's list is often more persuasive than anything you say.
Building a session around the span you actually have
For a six-year-old, three blocks of seven or eight minutes with real movement in between will produce more learning than one twenty-five-minute sitting, and far less damage. Each block gets one goal, stated plainly: today we are only doing the sounds, not the whole page.
A few things that tend to help:
- Stop while they still have some willingness left. The reflex to squeeze in one more page is where most sessions go wrong. Ending on a good minute is what makes tomorrow easier.
- Watch the clock, not the page. Set a timer for eight minutes and let unfinished work be unfinished.
- Reconsider the slot straight after school. For a lot of children that is the worst window of the day. Twenty minutes of food and nothing in particular first changes the whole session.
- Keep the format familiar. Novelty spends attention. A predictable routine leaves more of it for the actual thinking.
The delivery does not change the arithmetic. Whether the practice comes from a workbook, a tutor, a school app or something like Kid Genius World, the limit is the child's span rather than the platform's. Anything that assumes a six-year-old can concentrate for half an hour is describing an eleven-year-old.
What to watch over weeks, not days
Daily attention is noisy. A tired Tuesday tells you nothing. Over six to eight weeks, though, four things move in children whose focus is genuinely developing:
- Recovery after a mistake gets shorter, from a five-minute collapse to a shrug and a retry.
- They start without being told to start.
- They can sit inside not knowing for twenty or thirty seconds before asking for help.
- Every so often, they ask for a harder one.
That last one is the real marker. A child who volunteers for difficulty has learned from experience that effort tends to work out, and that is the whole point of the small wins.
One caveat is worth holding on to. If a child cannot sustain attention anywhere, including in activities they love, or if the distress around learning is severe or growing, or a teacher raises a concern, that is a conversation for the teacher and, if it continues, a paediatrician. Home routines are useful, but they are not an assessment, and no amount of clever scheduling substitutes for someone who can actually look.
